An Asset-Based Approach to Engaging Church and Community

is centered around the belief that individuals, groups, and communities have the gifts they need to address the needs they see around them. 1 Corinthians 12 tells us that each of us are given different gifts to serve the community and we are all a part of the body of Christ working together. Take Action

As a community, you have done gifts discernment and asset mapping. It is time for your faith community to look at that work, narrow down what you are feeling called to do now. We encourage you to start with one or two things God is calling you to do and start there.

Discovering Your Dream or Vision(s)

It may take some work to decide upon one or two things on which to focus or it may be obvious where God is calling your community into mission and ministry. You can use the Discovering Your Dream of Vision(s) Process as outlined to guide you through looking at your gifts discernment, asset mapping, and next steps.

Create General Action Steps

Now that you have your dream or vision in mind, you need to spend some time creating action steps to help you start on your way. If you have decided that you are going to use your building for a tutoring center, what steps do you need to take to get it up and running? What assets and gifts will be used?

Make a Detailed Plan and Timeline

It is time to get really detailed. Not everyone is good at creating the detail plan, so make sure you have someone leading this process that understands creating a detail plan. No detail is too small. The more detailed you can be, the fewer surprises you will have. Look at your assets inventory and determine if you have all the tools necessary to activate your plan. If not, then you might need to re-assess your plan or broaden your search. Make the list as detailed as possible, knowing how good it will feel to cross things off when you have completed them!

Once you have the details down, back up and create a timeline. When do you need the final piece in place? When do you need the first piece in place?

Take Action and Continue to Revisit the Plan and Timeline

Begin! Start to work your plan, revisiting the details and timeline as needed. You will always need to make adjustments because of delays or pieces you may not have thought about at the time. That is not a bad thing at all. Make the adjustments, additions, and deletions and keep working! Don’t forget to pray about it along the way!

Go and Do!

Call and Commission (Jeremiah 1:4-5)

Do Justice, Love Kindness, Walk Humbly with God (Micah 6:8)

Jesus calls us to action, as well as to prayer and reflection. Read these passages and then reflect.

  • How can Jesus’ life and ministry be a model for us as we engage in mission?
  • What am I being called and commissioned to do?
  • How am I living more fully into my Baptismal Covenant?
  • How does this action inform and empower my prayer life?
  • How do these passages impact my work?
